You can always tell when the food is going to be good, as you approach the car park and produce is being delivered from a local farm. And it was. The Woodhouse Garens is on Medlock Road, in the pleasant village of Woodhouses, near Failsworth, and is a public house and restaurant that sets its standards by which others should be judged.
The pub is a J W Lees-badged outlet and this Manchester brewer has dispensed with standard menus in its pubs and now has individuality. This one has been created under the supervision of Barrie and Christina Evans, who have been involved with Lees in former years.
I was being taken there for my birthday lunch by my cousin and as she was doing the driving, it gave me free rein to sample the excellently well-kept Lees Bitter.
A look at the menu revealed some delightful dishes - from simple starters, mains, sandwiches, salads, hot ciabattas and deserts.
The interrior of the pub has an almost country, cottagey feel to it and cosiness in its surroundings. We were so impressed with the set-up and the meals, we vowed to call again, which we did.
